PM Modi's 3 big announcements in address to nation
NEW DELHI: In his address to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday made three key announcements about India's Covid vaccination drive amid the growing threat posed by the highly transmissible Omicron variant.
Here are the key announcements made by PM Modi ...
- From January 3, 2022, children in the age group of 15-18 will be eligible for Covid vaccination. Currently, only those who are 18 and above were allowed to get vaccinated.
- From January 10, 2022, all healthcare and frontline workers will be eligible to get "precaution dose" or the third booster dose of the vaccine.
- From January 10, those who are 60+ with comorbidities can also get precaution doses on the recommendation of their doctors.
The government's decision to expand the vaccination ambit and allow for a third booster dose for select groups comes at a time when the Omicron variant of Covid has been spreading at a rapid pace around the world.
Several nations, including US and UK, have already permitted a third booster dose of vaccine for their citizens.
In India, over 450 cases of the variant, which is said to evade vaccine protection, have been detected so far.
During his address, the Prime Minister urged the people not to panic amid the Omicron threat, remain cautious and follow all Covid norms such as wearing of masks and maintaining social distancing.
India reported 7,189 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday and 387 deaths.
