'Transgender persons bill 'draconian', expect no better from govt,' says Derek O'Brien

Rajya Sabha TMC leader Derek O’Brien on Thursday criticised the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026, calling it “draconian” and accusing the government of bypassing proper scrutiny. He noted a sharp decline in bills sent to committees. The proposed law defines “transgender” without recognising self-identified identity. Activists have strongly opposed it, urging its complete withdrawal, warning it could undermine the rights, dignity and identity of transgender communities.

Parliament Session Live Updates: Shivraj Singh Chouhan says FTAs in 'interest of farmers', slams opposition's 'unwarranted' concerns

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday criticised the opposition for raising what he termed “unwarranted concerns” over recent agricultural provisions in trade agreements. Replying to a Lok Sabha debate on the Demands for Grants for the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, he strongly defended the government’s approach.

“Unwarranted fingers have been pointed here regarding agricultural agreements. As a farmer, as a citizen, and as India's Minister of Agriculture, I am stating with full responsibility that all the agricultural agreements and FTAs that have been made are in the interest of the farmers and in the interest of the country,” Chouhan said.

He highlighted structural reforms, noting that the department was merged to create the Department of Farmer Welfare with “heartfelt intent”. He also underlined a sharp rise in funding—from Rs 21,933 crore in 2013–14 to Rs 1,30,561 crore this year.

“The increase in this budget is unprecedented… it comes to Rs 3,32,410 crore. I am grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Finance Minister for this,” he added.

Chouhan outlined three priorities: ensuring food security, improving farmers’ livelihoods, and providing nutritious food. He said production has reached record levels under Narendra Modi.

Emphasising direct support, he stated: “Not only have we increased productivity… Rs 4,27,000 crore has been directly transferred to farmers' accounts in 22 instalments,” while criticising past schemes as ineffective.

Parliament Session Live Updates: Congress MP Manickam Tagore hits out at Kangana Ranaut over remarks on Rahul Gandhi

Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Wednesday criticised BJP MP Kangana Ranaut for calling Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, a “tapori” during a protest against the Prime Minister. Tagore dismissed her remarks as “laughable”, alleging that she “follows a script” and targets Gandhi deliberately.

Speaking to ANI, he said, “It's laughable that Kangana Ranaut is making that script. She is always a script player. Whatever script is given, she will follow it.” He defended Gandhi, describing him as widely respected and “loved by sisters across India”.

Tagore also questioned Ranaut’s record as an MP, asking whether she had raised concerns about her constituency, Mandi, or Himachal Pradesh.

Earlier, Ranaut accused Gandhi of misconduct, saying, “He walks in like a 'tapori' and heckles those giving interviews,” adding that his behaviour made women uncomfortable.

Parliament Session Live Updates: Jairam Ramesh questions lack of formal farewell for Jagdeep Dhankhar after 'compulsory retirement'

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday expressed concern over the absence of a formal farewell for former Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, nearly eight months after his abrupt resignation. In a post on X, he wrote, "Today the Rajya Sabha had a farewell function for MPs retiring in the next three months. It lasted almost 6 hours, with the PM attending for about an hour. Sadly, even after 8 months, there has been no farewell function for the former Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Shri Jagdeep Dhankar, who was compulsorily retired on July 21, 2025."

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met retiring and recently retired Rajya Sabha MPs at Rashtrapati Bhavan, alongside senior leaders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked outgoing members, stating, "there is no full stop in politics", and urged new MPs to learn from experienced parliamentarians.

Parliament Session Live Updates: 'In politics there is no full stop,' says PM Modi to outgoing Rajya Sabha MPs

"I am indebted to you for giving me an opportunity to speak on this special occasion. Honourable Chairman Sir, many issues are discussed in this House and everyone makes a very important contribution. There are also some bitter and sweet experiences along the way. However, when such an occasion arises, it is natural that we rise above party lines and a common sentiment emerges among all of us — that our colleagues are now moving forward for some other important responsibilities," said PM Modi.

He futher said: "Some members who are taking leave today are doing so with the hope of returning again. Others are leaving with the experience they have gained here and will continue to contribute in meaningful ways to society and public life. Parliament Session Live Updates: 'BJP may have used its agencies to intimidate', Misa Bharti on Rajya Sabha polls

"Somewhere there is a suspicion within the party and among all parties that horse-trading (during Rajya Sabha elections) may have taken place, or that the BJP may have used its agencies to intimidate or pressure them, through the ED, CBI, Income Tax, or by using cases against them," says RJD MP Misa Bharti.

Parliament Session Live Updates: House panel suggests enhancing minimum pension under EPS

The parliamentary standing committee on labour suggested that government raise the minimum monthly pension under Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) from Rs 1,000 at present to a more “realistic and dignified level”, commensurate with present-day living costs, for lakhs of retired workers.

“The committee is of the considered view that the existing minimum pension amount is inadequate to meet even the basic needs of pensioners, particularly in the present economic scenario marked by inflation and rising healthcare and living expenses,” it said.

“The (labour) ministry (should) undertake an urgent and comprehensive review of the minimum pension with a view to enhancing it to a more realistic and dignified level,” it added, noting that govt received many representation from pensioners seeking an upward revision for the same.

Parliament Session Live Updates: Retired officials demand Rahul apology over Parliament protest

Over 200 retired armed forces officers, former civil servants, diplomats and lawyers Tuesday accused leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi of violating parliamentary decorum during the opposition’s protest and demanded his apology.

“Rahul Gandhi, along with several MPs, was seen sitting on the steps of Parliament having tea and biscuits in a manner that was wholly unbecoming of members of the nation’s highest legislative body. The steps of Parliament are not a venue for spectacle or political theatre,” they said in an open letter endorsed by 204 signatories.

They alleged that Rahul’s action within the Parliament complex amounted to a deliberate defiance of the chair and showed disregard for parliamentary authority. “It shows an attitude of arrogance and entitlement,” they added.

They said Speaker Om Birla had issued an explicit instruction against demonstrations or protests within Parliament premises but the opposition, led by Rahul, disregarded the directive.

“Rahul must apologise to the nation for this behaviour and introspect the attitude that produced it, so that the solemnity, authority and institutional sanctity of the Parliament remain preserved,” they said.

Parliament Session Live Updates: Congress suspends 3 Odisha legislators for cross-voting

Congress suspended on Tuesday three of its Odisha MLAs and moved to initiate disqualification proceedings against them for cross-voting alongside eight BJD legislators to defeat Datteswar Hota, an Independent candidate backed by both parties in Monday’s Rajya Sabha election.

“Sofia Firdous, Ramesh Jena and Dasarathi Gomango have been suspended for violating the party whip and voting for the BJP-backed candidate,” Odisha PCC’s disciplinary committee chairperson, Sujit Padhi, said.

CLP’s Rama Chandra Kadam wrote to speaker Surama Padhy soon after the trio’s suspension, seeking their disqualification from the assembly. “Their conduct has not only undermined party discipline but also goes against the democratic mandate under which they were elected,” he wrote.

In a separate letter, Kadam urged the speaker to change seating arrangements in the House so that Firdous, Jena and Gomango aren’t next to their colleagues.

Naveen Patnaik’s BJD, too, slammed the eight party MLAs who cross-voted for allegedly succumbing to the “lure of money” and “betraying” the party and the people who elected them. “BJD has zero tolerance for indiscipline,” party spokesperson Lenin Mohanty said.

Parliament Session Live Updates: BJP nearly won 2nd Haryana seat, Congress hung on by a thread

The fight for the second Rajya Sabha seat in Haryana went down to the wire in Monday’s election, and BJP was very nearly handed a surprise victory as five Congress lawmakers cross-voted and four of its votes were declared invalid. The opposition party clung on and scraped through by the narrowest of margins.

BJP’s Sanjay Bhatia, a former Lok Sabha MP, and Congress’ Karamveer Boudh won, but the scoreline didn’t reflect the drama and suspense that dragged on into the early hours of Tuesday. The cross-voting and invalidation of votes came as an embarrassment for Congress, which had bundled off 32 MLAs to Himachal three days ahead of the election, ostensibly to shield them from poaching attempts and to train them to vote.

CM Nayab Singh Saini took a dig at opposition, remarking “25% of CLP has already shifted its loyalty away from Congress”.
On paper, both BJP (48 MLAs) and Congress (37 MLAs) looked set to win one seat each. With INLD abstaining, each RS candidate needed 30 first-preference votes to win.

But the entry of BJP-backed Independent, Satish Nandal, skewed the equation for Congress. After ensuring Sanjay Bhatia’s victory, BJP could still claim 21 votes, including three Independents, but the gap still seemed impossible to bridge for Nandal. On paper, that is.

Simmering infighting within Bihar’s opposition Grand Alliance came to the fore Tuesday, a day after the bloc failed to win any of the five seats in the Rajya Sabha polls. Congress MLAs blamed ally RJD for fielding what they described as a “wrong candidate”, leading to the debacle.

Surendra Prasad Kushwaha, one of the three Congress MLAs who stayed away from voting on Monday, said he did so as RJD had made a poor choice in selecting its nominee, Amrendra Dhari Singh. Kushwaha questioned why Deepak Yadav, MD of a sugar mill, or Mukesh Sahani, chief of Vikassheel Insaan Party, was not chosen instead. “I cannot support NDA, and since RJD chose the wrong candidate, I thought it better not to vote at all,” Kushwaha posted.

Manoj Vishwas, another Congress legislator who skipped voting, claimed RJD had fielded Amrendra, a Bhumihar, without consulting state Congress netas. Independent MP Pappu Yadav accused RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav of failing to build a consensus.

Bihar Congress witnessed renewed dissent as party netas and expelled rebels raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the Rajya Sabha polls. State Congress chief Rajesh Ram protested outside the party’s office, accusing BJP of indulging in “vote theft” and “MLA theft”.
