<div class="section1"><div class="Normal">LUCKNOW: The curtain began drawing to a close on police investigations into the Madhumita murder case, when the last of the absconding accused, Madhumani Tripathi, wife of former UP minister Amarmani Tripathi, surrendered before the special CBI magistrate on Thursday afternoon. <br /><br />Despite CBI’s request for police remand to record her statement, she was sent to judicial remand till April 8.<br /><br />Around 3.20 pm on Thursday, Madhumani surfaced at the CBI court, flanked by a team of lawyers, as word of her surrender spread across the city.

Within minutes, scores of journalists and TV news channel crews reached the campus. But dozens of men who threw a human ring around Madhumani managed to keep the lensmen away as the court proceedings began.<br /><br />CBI counsel K P Singh sought a five-day police remand. A battery of lawyers representing Madhumani opposed this, on the grounds that the CBI had already filed a chargesheet; hence, technically, there was nothing more the CBI could seek from her. <br /><br />Accepting the argument, special CBI magistrate Digvijay Nath remanded her to judicial custody.<br /><br />As she came out, lawyers and cousins of Madhumani continued to keep the cameras away. She was hurriedly escorted to a fleet of cars waiting for her.<br /><br />Then, there was beeline for the district jail, where Amarmani is lodged, apparently to seek directives from Amarmani on the next move. <br /><br />Madhumani emerged as prime accused in Madhumita murder case, but was underground and supposedly out of India as well. <br /><br />The CBI issued a ‘red corner’ notice through Interpol, seeking help in nabbing her. <br /><br /><span style="" font-weight:="" bold="">CBI will quiz Madhumani</span><br /><br />NEW DELHI: The CBI will interrogate former UP minister Amarmani Tripathi’s wife Madhumani during her 14-day judicial remand.<br /><br />‘‘Since she is the main accused, her questioning is likely to shed more light on the murder,’’ a CBI official said here on Thursday.<br /><br />The agency, which has filed a chargesheet after investigating the case, will make an appeal to the concerned court in Lucknow for her custody. It is likely to move the court on Friday.<br /><br />If the CBI gets Madhumani’s custody, it may bring her to its Delhi headquarters for questioning. Her questioning will help unravel some unanswered questions in the murky murder case though the motive for the crime has already been established. Also, the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad HC refused Amarmani bail. </div> </div>
