NEW DELHI: Want to climb up the corporate ladder? Then a nip here, a tuck there and a little suturing and implanting are the new short-cuts being used by men to succeed. All in the hope that good looks along with inherent talent and personality will help them forge ahead of competition. This quest to fly high is seeing more and more Delhi men ready to go under the surgeon's knife.
Tailor-made looks never come easy.
According to Rashmi Taneja, plastic surgeon, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, "Around 15% of our plastic surgery patients are men hailing from the corporate sector. They don't want clients to perceive them as 'older'. We often get specific requests for facial and body enhancements." In fact, this emphasis on looks, says Manohar Sharma of Sushila Medicore is more common among those working in MNCs or those who want to join it. "And they are from all levels," he says. Says Rakesh Khurana*, manager in an MNC, "When I used to go to office in the morning, I would have eyebags. It looked as if I hadn't slept for days. People, including my clients, would ask me that why I always look tired. Finally, I decided to get rid of them. I took a week off and spent Rs 30,000 on the treatment, but it was worth it." Taneja remembers a patient who came to her with frown lines. "They made him look like an angry old man. His clients were getting a negative impression about him and as a result, his work was suffering. We got his frown lines removed. Now he's doing well in his profession." To achieve those wonder looks, men opt for a range of surgical solutions. These include liposuction, blepharoplaspy (eye bag treatment), breast enlargement or reduction, nose jobs and permanent hair removal. These could cost anywhere between Rs 30,000 and Rs 1 lakh. And side effects? Taneja says, "Though such treatments are not harmful, certain precautions have to be taken. We advise patients to quit smoking during the course of surgery and keep a watch on their blood pressure." (*Name changed to protect identity)
