After the fire NCB fears that villagers might cultivate cannabis again, which has galvanized authorities to rehabilitate Malana residents in Himachal Pradesh.
CHANDIGARH: The fire that has ravaged Himachal Pradesh's Malana village also threatens to destroy the efforts to pull the villagers out of drug trade. Malana is known worldwide for its cannabis. "The fear of villagers taking to cultivating cannabis again has galvanized authorities to rehabilitate Malana residents," O P Sharma, former superintendent of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) said.
Sharma said due to educational programmes and various laws, around 70% of the residents had been pulled out of narco-trade. Additional SP of Kullu district Hardesh Bisht said, "The biggest challenge will be to prevent the people from going back to their old ways." Herbs collected from the forests can easily replace drugs. Sharma said in 2004, villagers sold herbs worth Rs 15 lakh to pharmaceutical companies. Sharma said he has contacted NGOs to chalk out a strategy to rehabilitate villagers immediately and preserve their unique architecture and culture.
