World News Live Updates: Three killed after Mount Dukono eruption in Indonesia

Three people were killed after Mount Dukono erupted in North Maluku on Friday, local police said. Rescue teams were also working to evacuate around 20 hikers trapped by the eruption, according to authorities.

The volcano erupted at around 7:40 am local time, sending volcanic ash nearly 10 km into the sky, as per Xinhua. Officials warned residents against entering a 4-km radius around the crater and cautioned about possible volcanic mudflows during rain.

Aviation authorities also issued an orange-level warning, restricting flights near the volcano due to ash clouds.

Authorities said extensive police operations were underway after the incident was reported in the town centre at around 0700 GMT.

Officials have not yet released details about the number of hostages or the identity of those involved. The situation remains ongoing.

Police Commissioner S Dev Datta Singh confirms five arrests in Railway constable’s mob lynching case in Balianta. He says, “An incident took place yesterday near Bhingarpur village under Balianta police station within the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Commissionerate area. A group of people attacked a man, and due to the injuries sustained in the attack, he later died in the hospital. According to the investigation so far, the man and another person were riding a bike, while two schoolgirls were traveling on a scooter. Their bike reportedly collided with the scooter, causing the girls to fall. The girls have alleged in their FIR that while helping them get up, the man misbehaved with them and attempted molestation and rape. After the girls raised an alarm, people from the nearby area gathered at the spot. Some members of the crowd attacked one of the man…The individuals responsible for the assault that led to the man’s death will be identified and brought under the law, and strict punishment will be ensured. Five people have already been arrested, and efforts are underway to arrest others.”

Three killed in Chapra, Bihar as trucks rams into van

Three people were killed and several others were injured as speeding truck rammed into a pick-up van carrying an orchestra team on NH-531 near Banwar Flyover.

"We were on 112 patrolling duty when we received information about an accident. When we reached the spot, we found that three people were already dead and several others had suffered serious injuries. We took them to the Sadar Hospital for treatment. As per initial report, a speeding truck had rammed into the pick up van which was carrying orchestra team members," a policeman, Tayyab Hussain Ansari, told PTI.

Court rules Trump administration's cancellation of humanities grants as unconstitutional

A federal judge in New York ruled that the Trump administration's cancellation of more than $100 million in humanities grants to scholars, writers, research groups and other organizations was unconstitutional, and the Department of Government Efficiency had no authority to end the funding.


US District Judge Colleen McMahon in Manhattan sided with The Authors Guild, several other groups and several people who had their grants canceled and sued DOGE and the National Endowment for the Humanities. McMahon permanently barred the administration from terminating the grants and criticized DOGE's use of artificial intelligence in nixing the funding.

12 arrested in Aligarh over interstate illegal arms trafficking racket

Police arrested 12 alleged members of an interstate gang involved in trafficking country-made firearms from the ruins of an old fort on the outskirts of Aligarh. Officials said the accused had criminal records and operated a network supplying illegal weapons across Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states. Ten firearms and a large quantity of cartridges were recovered.
