Despite Delhi police's opposition, the High Court on Thursday granted permission to the socialite to visit London.
NEW DELHI: Despite the Delhi police's plea that Malini Ramani should not be allowed to leave the country as she was charged with destruction of evidence in the Jessica Lall murder, the Delhi High Court on Thursday granted permission to the socialite to visit London. A Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Vijender Jain and Justice S N Agarawal, however asked Malini to desposit the passports of her parents, Bina Ramani and George Malhot, a surety of Rs five lakh, besides an undertaking that she would return back to India on June 1.
Though the Delhi police counsel Mukta Gupta opposed the move, Senior Counsel Rajiv Nayar appearing for the petitioner argued that Malini and her mother Bina Ramani had both left the country nearly 50 time during the trial proceedings, hence there was no logic in preventing her from visiting London for a fortnight. He also submitted that even on the 'principles of parity' Malini should be granted the plea as her mother Bina was granted permission last month to visit Phuket, Thailand for a marriage function.
However, the Delhi police counsel argued that Malini should not be granted the permission as she was charged with destruction of evidence. She said the special investigation team probing the lapse into the botched up investigations of the murder which led to the acquittal of all the nine accused was examining the role of the mother and daughter for destroying the evidence at the scene of offence. But the court while imposing the conditions allowed Malini to visit London in connection with an exhibition scheduled from May 17 to 31.
