BANGALORE: As of now, the
Jagadish Shettar government seems safe, if one were to look at the numbers.
If the party decides to continue in power despite all the rebellion, it can still
sail through with some deft politicking and hard work.
Scenario one What happens if 13 MLAs resign? The BJP’s strength will go down to 106. The assembly strength will reduce to 210 and the magic number required will be 106.
The
BJP has the support of one independent Varthur Prakash, who is a cabinet minister. So, its effective strength is 107. Nevertheless, it will be a cliff-hanger for the government.
Scenario two What happens if MLAs affiliated to the BSR Congress also resign or don’t support Shettar government? Four BJP MLAs have identified with the BSR Congress. If they also resign, the assembly strength reduces to 206, BJP’s to 102 (with Varthur Prakash, it will be 103), and the magic number to 103. The BJP then may have to woo the five independents (excluding
B Sriramulu, the BSR Congress chief) and sail through.
Number crunching Actual assembly strength – 225 (including a nominated member) Vacancies – 2 Assembly strength – 223 Magic number – 112 JD(S) – 26 Congress – 71 Independents – 7 BJP – 119 (including Speaker and nominated member)
