India-Canada tension: No difficulty for students on campus, have our own immigration officers, says York University VC

In the backdrop of strained India-Canada relationships, Rhonda Lenton, president and vice-chancellor at York University, Canada which has 2000 Indian students, assured that there have been no difficulty for students on her campus. "I am in touch with them regularly. We are an inclusive diverse university. I am confident that we are committed to providing support to our students in India," she said, on the sidelines of a programme in the city on Friday.

In the backdrop of strained India-Canada relationships, Rhonda Lenton, president and vice-chancellor at York University, Canada, which has 2,000 Indian students, assured that there have been no difficulty for students on her campus.
"I am in touch with them regularly. We are an inclusive diverse university. I am confident that we are committed to providing support to our students in India," she said, on the sidelines of a programme in the city on Friday.
Talking further about the current suspension of visa for Canadians by India, she also said there would not be an issue for Indian students travelling from Canada to India, because they won't fall under that particular category."Meanwhile, for Canadians, I cannot speak on behalf of the policies of India or Canada," she added.

She also believes that there would be no problem for students heading from India to Canada. "We are fully supportive, our students from India who are interested in traveling to Canada. In York University, we have our own immigration officers as well, and are there to support any students if they have any difficulty vis a vis the application. We have mental health, physical health and financial health services for our students," she said.

While talking to media persons earlier on, she said we have 2,000 Indian students, plus all the domestic India students, and are very attentive to any concerns of our students.

She agreed that Canada has a shrinking population, and hence they knew the importance of collaborating with other countries.
"We are attentive to supporting our students and their well being," she added.
She was rushed out of the conference hall citing reasons of her flight schedule, while reporters sought time to talk about the impact of the prevalent political situation in Canadian universities.
