NEW DELHI: Monsoon may begin its withdrawal within 24 hours, possibly on Monday, and a new cyclonic circulation is likely to form over north Andaman Sea and its neighbourhood on September 29, IMD said on Sunday.

The new system, the IMD indicated, may bring more rainfall along the eastern coasts towards the end of this month and early October.

"Under its influence a low pressure area is likely to form over north Andaman Sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal during subsequent 24 hours (September 30). Thereafter, it is likely to move west-northwestwards with possibility of gradual intensification," it said.

Meanwhile, it predicted continuation of "heavy to very heavy rainfall" over Bihar, Jharkhand, sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and adjoining Assam and Meghalaya during next 24 hours (Monday) and decrease in its intensity thereafter. "Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall" is also expected over south Gujarat region and adjoining Konkan and Western Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra during the same period.

"Due to anti-cyclonic flow developing over northwest India at lower tropospheric levels and dry weather prevailing over parts of southwest Rajasthan, conditions are becoming favourable for withdrawal of southwest monsoon from parts of west Rajasthan during next 24 hours," said the IMD on Sunday.

The four-month monsoon season ends on September 30 but withdrawal activity generally continues till October 15.
