Himachal Pradesh Election Results 2022 Live Updates: Congress holds meeting of newly-elected Himachal MLAs

Himachal Pradesh Election Results 2022 Live Updates: The Congress, which wrested power from the BJP in Himachal Pradesh, has scheduled a meeting of all its newly-elected MLAs in Shimla on Friday and the gathering is likely to approve a resolution authorising the Congress president to nominate the CLP leader.

The Congress on Thursday gained 40 seats in the 68-member Assembly in the hill state which maintained its history of not electing any incumbent administration to power since 1985.

Mukesh Agnihotri, the opposition's leader, said that a meeting will take place in Shimla on Friday.

The Congress's current dilemma is choosing a chief ministerial figure who can unite the party moving ahead.

State party president Pratibha Singh is considered a key frontrunner for the chief minister's post, closely followed by former party chief Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and outgoing CLP leader Mukesh Agnihotri.

Rebels played a spoilsport for both the BJP and Congress in 12 out of the 68 assembly segments in Himachal Pradesh.

  1. The rebels, who contested as independents in the assembly polls, marred the prospects of BJP candidates in eight seats.
  2. Congress candidates were hit in four assembly segments.
  3. Out of the total 99 independents who were in the fray, 28 were rebels.
  4. All the three winning Independents -- K L Thakur from Nalagarh, Hoshiyar Singh from Dehra and Ashish Sharma from Hamirpur -- were BJP rebels who were denied party tickets.

How Nadaun became a hot seat in Himachal
Nadaun became a hot seat in the elections as Former Himachal Pradesh Congress chief Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who is seen as a chief minister contender, headed the Congress election campaign committee. Also, this was the fourth time that Agnihotri locked horns with him from the constituency. In the 2017 elections, Sukhu defeated Agnihotri by 2,349 votes, while in 2012, Agnihotri got the better of the Congress leader by more than 6,000 votes. In 2007, Sukhu defeated Agnihotri by over 500 votes.Home Minister Amit Shah's jibe at Sukhu about his chief ministerial candidature was also the talk of the town during the election campaigning.Shah had indirectly taken a dig at Sukhu's candidature, saying the Congress was a party of 'rajas and ranis' and even though many chief ministerial aspirants were in the fray, no one would actually get a chance.Top BJP leaders had campaigned for Agnihotri, who also remained steadfast in the area day and night, while Sukhu remained largely absent due to his responsibilities for the campaign.
