Gujjar stir: SC pulls up Raje, Sheila, Maya govts

NEW DELHI: Describing the violence during Delhi bandh on Monday as a “national shame", the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed Rajasthan, UP and Delhi governments to submit a report on the incidents in the wake of the Gujjar stir.
Taking suo motu cognisance of the incidents widely reported in the media, a Bench of Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice D K Jain, observed that "the incidents of violence are a national shame."
The judges, citing TV footage said "hordes of people" were involved in destruction of public property.The "mobs were indulging in such violent incidents as if they have done some laudable acts when the TV cameras focussed on them," they observed.
The court directed the Commissioner of the Delhi Police and the Directors General of Police of Haryana and Rajasthan to file their affidavits within ten days.
The apex court also appointed senior counsel Rajiv Dhawan as amicus curiae to assist the court in the matter. The Bench said the amicus curiae will also submit a report after collecting video footage from TV channels and also the inputs collected from respective state governments.
The court has posted the matter for further hearing on June 18.
