Gujarat Election Result Updates: BJP fielded 45 new faces by dropping sitting MLAs, 43 won

Gujarat Assembly election results 2022 live updates: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not only defied 27 years of incumbency in Gujarat but also made history by winning the highest-ever number of seats, and significantly improving on its record for vote share. The Man of the Match was clearly Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded party workers in the state, saying each of them is a champion. "This historic win would never be possible without the exceptionally hard work of our Karyakartas, who are the real strength of our Party. People blessed the politics of development and at the same time expressed a desire that they want this momentum to continue at a greater pace. I bow to Gujarat's Jan Shakti" he said.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President JP Nadda thanked the public and party workers for the victory in Gujarat and said, "We have received 52.5 per cent vote share and 156 seats in Gujarat. This has happened because of the politics of development and welfare. It is also the result of an "irresponsible" opposition. The public has refused the politics of dynasties and corruption," said Nadda."

CM Bhupendra Patel is all set for his second term with the BJP planning to organize a grand swearing-in ceremony at the Gandhinagar assembly helipad ground on December 12. State BJP president C R Paatil said the ceremony will be held at 2pm. “Bhupendra Patel will continue as the CM,” he said.
PM Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah and a bevy of top BJP leaders will attend the swearing-in.

Meanwhile, the Congress hit rock bottom in Gujarat, settling for a dismal show of winning only 17 seats in the 182-member state assembly, baffled party leaders wondered whether the results could have been different had Rahul Gandhi campaigned in the state.

In 2017, when the Congress came very close to wresting Gujarat from the BJP, Rahul Gandhi had extensively toured the state, holding as many as 150 big and small public rallies during a 22-day campaign.

The 2017 performance of the party -- 77 seats out of 182 -- was the best since 1985, the year it had created a record by winning 149 seats, a record that the BJP surpassed on Thursday.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had contested Gujarat with an eye on becoming the key challenger to the BJP, managed five seats in the 182-member Gujarat assembly.

The Big Message: Opposition space remains crowded
It was in any case brimming with competing ambitions of a Congress that has struggled to reconcile itself to its diminution and regional chieftains who hope to occupythe space that has opened up. AAP’s hope to emerge as the most effective rallying point for anti-BJP sentiments failed to materialise, throwing a lifeline for Congress. But neither this, nor the win in tiny HP will be enough to help it get itself re-credentialled as the ‘other’ pole. The continuing commotion in the anti-Modi column can help himin a contest which is, once again, expected to turn presidential.

The Big Message: Congress slide continues
The miserable performance in Gujarat, where the party had so far held its own in assembly polls, is a sign of leadership failure and organisational enfeeblement, and will dent its credentials asan effective challenger to BJP. The win in HP won’t be enough to redeem the narrative. The need to score a clear win in Karnataka has assumed even greater urgency.

The Big Message: BJP undisputed frontrunner for 2024
That Modi-led BJP would enter the race for 2024 with an edge was never in question. The Gujarat landslide reinforces his status as undisputed frontrunner. The advantage may grow even stronger. With the worst of Covid hopefully behind us, India’s growing global heft and economic recovery (boosting govt revenues) will give him a better narrative to project and more money to spend on infra and welfare.

Modi wave triggers Hand-slide & AAP-ocalypse

Romping to a blockbuster triumph powered by the script, leadership, and inspiration of its talismanic star Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP created history in Gujarat’s electoral politics by winning 156 seats. The BJP’s victory has hammered the principal opposition Congress deeper into oblivion and crushed the aspirations of the new entrant, the AAP. Records tumbled on Thursday as the BJP not only put up its best-ever show but also surpassed the 37-year-old 149-seat touchstone set by the Congress under the leadership of former chief minister Madhavsinh Solanki. The Congress languished at just 17 seats, the lowest ever and the reflection of abject surrender. Its fighting performance in 2017 had won it 77 seats.

AAP calls its Gujarat show impressive; results suggest it played spoilsport
The Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday won five seats and secured 13 per cent of the popular vote in Gujarat, in a performance that belied its high-decibel campaign in the state but cleared the way for it to become a national party.

During the campaign, the party positioned itself and its national convenor Kejriwal as the sole challenger of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi respectively.

Vote counting on Thursday, however, showed that the party succeeded more in splitting opposition votes and helping the BJP score a historic win. It also failed to replace the Congress party as the principal opposition in the state. Despite the AAP cutting into its votes, the Congress still polled 27 per cent votes and won 17 seats.
