The national job programme, being implemented in 330 districts under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005, has a budgetary provision of over Rs 11,000 crore and has yielded encouraging results, rural development minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh told the Rajya Sabha.

During the debate, members raised the issue of excessive job cards being issued without commensurate work and corruption at the field level. They also raised a demand for social audit to make the programme a success. The rural development minister said that of all the previous rural employment schemes, the NREG programme had the minimum leakage and would change the face of rural India in the next few years.
