PUNE: Whether in the ODI team or not, whether Test captain or not, Sourav 'Dada' Ganguly knows how to throw his weight around. And also rally behind his team.
The Prince of Kolkata's arrival in Pune on Tuesday was blemished by various happenings.
First, his flight was delayed by almost 40 minutes a similar but more prolonged fate his team had to face a day before because of a hoax call at the NSC Bose airport in Kolkata.
Once in the city, he was not satisfied with the hotel accommodation. From Hotel Kohinoor Executive, he moved to Taj Blue Diamond, and also wanted his team members there.
But it was not possible because there were not enough rooms available at the five-star hotel. They had only four rooms (at Taj Blue Diamond) to offer for the visiting Bengal team.
Dada checked in at Taj Blue Diamond and late in the evening, he decided to stay with the team at the Kohinoor Executive.
Bengal team coach Paras Mhambrey said: "The special room booked for Ganguly had some problems that were sorted out by evening. He wanted to be with the team."
The moment he entered the Blue Diamond, he was in for more shock. News clippings of Rahul Dravid replacing him as Test captain for the Sri Lanka series were flashed on television channels.
Hotel sources said he appeared calm and composed. He had a simple meal dahi bhaat (curd rice) and closeted himself before he decided to go to the Nehru Stadium for batting practice.
Padded up, he went to face young Club of Maharashtra players who were asked to bowl for him. And what a pity, Ganguly was clean bowled on the very first delivery from Pushkar Joshi much to the amusement of the motley crowd.
