G7 Summit 2025 Live Updates: PM Modi and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic visit City Centre in Zagreb
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to US President Donald Trump and told him that India had paused strikes on Pakistan during Operation Sindoor only after Islamabad’s request.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Canada on Monday to participate in the G7 summit in Kananaskis, marking his first visit to the country in ten years.
PM Modi is currently on a four-day tour covering three nations — Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia. After completing the first leg of his trip in Cyprus, he went to Canada at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
This was PM Modi's sixth consecutive appearance at the G7 summit.
PM Modi also held a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit. His visit came a little over a month after India's Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attacks.
The Prime Minister last visited Canada in 2015, a trip that helped elevate India-Canada relations to a strategic partnership.
In 2024, bilateral trade in goods between the two countries reached USD 8.6 billion, with India exporting goods worth USD 4.2 billion and importing USD 4.4 billion. Trade in services stood at USD 14.3 billion, with India’s exports valued at USD 2.5 billion and imports at USD 11.8 billion.
The G7 summit takes place against a backdrop of escalating global tensions, including the intensifying conflict between Iran and Israel and trade disputes driven by US President Donald Trump's tariff policies.
Canada took over the G7’s rotating presidency on January 1, 2025. This year’s gathering marks the 50th anniversary of the G7 summit.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, the host of this year’s leaders meeting, has greeted the leaders at an official welcome ceremony in front of a picturesque pine tree backdrop.
Carney and his wife, Diana Fox Carney, engaged each of the leaders in small talk before posing for photos.

Carney said the world is “more divided and dangerous” than during past summits and other “hinge moments,” citing G7 gatherings after the fall of the Berlin Wall or the 9/11 terrorist attack on the United States.
With the leaders of the US, Germany, France, Japan, the United Kingdom and Italy seated before him, Carney said, “the world looks to this table for leadership.”
He predicted they’d have “frank discussions” over the two-day summit and not always agree, but he said that where they do agree it will make a difference for their citizens.

G7 Summit Live: European G7 leaders held an informal meeting about Middle East
The four European G7 leaders held an informal meeting over glasses of Canadian wine on the eve of the summit Sunday night, without US President Donald Trump, who had yet to arrive at the venue in the Canadian Rockies.
It started when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer bumped into German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in a restaurant-bar area of the venue in the resort of Kananaskis. French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni dropped by and it became an hourlong informal meeting during which the conflict between Israel and Iran was discussed.

G7 Summit Live: UN chief heads to G7 meeting in Canada
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is heading to Canada to take part in a session on energy security.
UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said Guterres will participate in Tuesday’s session for G7 and invited leaders on “diversification, technology and investment to ensure access and affordability in a changing world.”
The secretary-general will meet Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney on the margins of the meeting, Haq said.
He said other meetings would be announced later when asked if the UN chief would meet with US President Donald Trump.

G7 Summit Live: British PM says G7 wants 'de-escalation' between Israel, Iran
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday he believed Group of Seven leaders meeting in Canada were united in wanting de-escalation between Israel and Iran.
"I do think there's a consensus for de-escalation," Starmer told reporters at the summit in the Canadian Rockies.
"Obviously, what we need to do today is to bring that together and to be clear about how it is to be brought about," he said.
"But the risk of the conflict escalating is obvious, I think, and the implications -- not just for the region but globally -- are really immense, so the focus has to be on de-escalation," he said.
Starmer said he spoke with most G7 leaders after they arrived Sunday and had spoken by telephone to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

She said fencing was a minimum eight feet (2.4 meters) high to ensure guest safety as part of a multi-pronged operation to prevent "close encounters" with wildlife.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday said that he will discuss buying US weapons with Donald Trump at the G7 summit, but added that US military aid was not on the agenda.
"We are not talking to America today about new assistance. Indeed, one of the issues I will discuss with President Trump at the meeting is the defence package that Ukraine is ready to buy," Zelenskyy said during a visit to Vienna, from where he was to travel to Canada for this week's G7 summit.
The Ukrainian president, who has overseen his country's fightback against Russian forces for more than three years, said that "I can't imagine and I don't want to imagine... how to live without and fight without the help of the United States".
He added: "I think we all have to work to make sure that the alliance between America and Europe doesn't fall apart."
