NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 78th death anniversary on Friday and later paid floral tribute at Raj Ghat.In a post on X, PM Modi remembered Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals, his emphasis on Swadeshi, and his enduring inspiration for a self-reliant India."My deepest respects to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on his death anniversary. The revered Bapu always laid great emphasis on Swadeshi, which forms the bedrock of our resolve for a developed and self-reliant India. His life and deeds shall forever inspire his fellow countrymen to tread the path of duty,” he said.
India observes Martyrs' Day every year on January 30 to mark the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and to honour his contribution to the country’s freedom struggle.An official function to commemorate the day was scheduled at Mahatma Gandhi Smriti Sthal at Rajghat. In view of the event, the Delhi Traffic Police issued a traffic advisory and announced heightened security arrangements in parts of central Delhi. According to the advisory, traffic diversions may be implemented on a need basis at key intersections, including ITO Chowk, Delhi Gate, Guru Nanak Chowk, Shantivan Chowk, Rajghat DTC Depot and the IP Flyover.
Traffic restrictions, regulation and diversions were enforced between 9 am and 12 noon on several arterial roads and surrounding stretches to ensure the smooth conduct of the function and public safety.Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse at Gandhi Smriti in Birla House, months after India attained independence.
