Farmers close toll plaza in Haryana's Ambala, Karnal
"Vehicles are not paying the toll since midnight. Some farmers had come and forced us to close the toll plaza. We haven't received any information yet as to how long this will continue but the farmers are saying that it will remain toll-free throughout the day till midnight," said Ravi Tiwari, in-charge at Shambhu Toll Plaza in Ambala, on Saturday. Apart from Ambala, farmers also closed Bastara Toll Plaza in Karnal late last night, as part of their agitation.

Protesting farmers detained in Aligarh for trying to make highway toll plazas toll-free
Dozens of farmers were detained in different parts of this district on Saturday for trying to make toll plazas on highways toll-free as part of their stir against the Central agri laws, police said. A large number of protestors at Kurana village under Tappal police station have been taken into police custody and would be kept under detention till 11 pm, officials said.

Farmers picket toll plazas in Haryana

Intensifying their protest against the Centre's new agri laws, farmers took over some toll plazas in Haryana on Saturday, not allowing authorities to collect fees from commuters. The agitating farmers had earlier said they would picket toll plazas to press their demand for a repeal of the three new laws, which were voted through in Parliament in September amid strong protests by opposition parties. More than 100 farmers led by Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leaders Malkit Singh and Manish Chaudhry gathered at a toll plaza on the Ambala-Hisar highway, around 15 kilometers from Ambala city. The BKU activists raised slogans demanding the withdrawal of the farm laws.

Heavy police deployment on Delhi-Jaipur Expressway
Amid threats by various farmers outfits to block the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway on December 12, a heavy police deployment was seen at the Delhi-Gurugram border areas at Bilaspur, Panchgaon, Kherki Daula toll, Dundahera-Delhi border and National Highway-48. Farmer's movements from Panchgaon Chowk to the expressway has not materialised yet. The Gurugram police department has claimed they have deployed more than 2,000 police force at various points along NH-48 to ensure law and order and no disruption to traffic movement. "We have deployed a large number of police personnel in view of the farmer's decision to block the National Highway and till now we have no information about any farmers outfits having entered Gurugram via Rewari or Rajasthan," said Nikita Gahlaut, DCP

How many sacrifices will farmers have to make to get agri laws repealed, asks Rahul Gandhi

The Congress on Saturday cited a media report to claim that 11 farmers had died in the last 17 days while protesting against the new agri laws, with former party chief Rahul Gandhi asking how many more sacrifices will farmers have to make to get the legislations repealed. At least five rounds of formal talks have taken place between the Centre and representatives of farmers, mainly from Punjab and Haryana, protesting on various borders of the national capital for over two weeks, but the deadlock has continued with the unions sticking to their main demand for the repeal of the three contentious laws. "How many more sacrifices will the farmers have to make to get the agri laws repealed?" Gandhi asked in a tweet in Hindi, tagging a media report which claimed that 11 protesting farmers had lost their lives in the last 17 days due to various reasons such as ill health or a mishap.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the government is committed to ensuring the welfare of farmers and protecting their interests, as thousands of farmers continued protests for the 17th straight day against three new farm laws to overhaul procurement and sale of produce.Speaking at the 93rd annual general meeting (AGM) of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), PM said recent farm reforms will give farmers new markets and access to technology, and help bring investments that will benefit the farming community.

Farmers seize Punjab-Haryana toll plazas, make them free
All toll plazas in Punjab and Haryana, including those located on the Delhi highways, on Saturday were taken over by protesting farmers, allowing vehicles to pass through them without paying any fees. In Karnal, the hometown of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, the farmers closed the Bastara toll plaza on the National Highway-44 and Peont toll plaza on Karnal-Jind National Highway 709-A. The police have been deployed in both states to prevent untoward incident. The farmers closed the Bastara toll at midnight to give free passage to commuters, while the Peont toll plaza was made free in the morning. This comes as the farmers' agitation around Delhi reaches Day 17, and is expected to further intensify.
