NEW DELHI: Before taking over as the new finance minister, P
Chidambaram on Wednesday held a ‘farewell’ meeting with officers of the home ministry at North Block where he is learnt to have said that he wished he could have completed his tenure as a home minister.
Officers who attended the meeting said that Chidambaram regretted not to complete his tenure as a home ministry.
He, as officials quoted him as saying, said he could not complete his tenure first as a finance minister (during UPA-I), and now he could not complete it as a home minister (in UPA-II).
Speaking on behalf of officers, the Union home secretary
R K Singh praised Chidambaram for all his works as a home minister and said the country would remember his tenure as a “home minister”, if not now, certainly few years later when people would look back and see what all had been done by him during 2008-12.
Singh is learnt to have also told Chidambaram that the home ministry would continue to look for his help as the finance minister.
