Congress wasn't expecting defeat. A close fight, perhaps, but not a rout. An example of how laidback Congress was is its reaction - or lack of it - to BJP's promise of a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000 to every married woman. It was a full nine days before the state leadership woke up and decided to match it following requests from party candidates and local leaders. Baghel announced an allowance of Rs 1,250 for all women, regardless of marital status or age, just four days before the elections, but party workers struggled to effectively communicate the scheme. BJP workers had by then diligently collected forms from nearly 50 lakh women.

Cracks in Congress ship show up in battle, sink prospects

The ruling Congress in Chhattisgarh faced deep-seated tensions and divisions, impacting their performance in the 2023 bypolls. A public tussle between CM Bhupesh Baghel and health minister T S Singhdeo, including a battle over the CM's chair, highlighted the internal conflicts. Baghel's supporters demonstrated their strength at the AICC headquarters, while Singhdeo expressed his discontent on multiple occasions. The election campaign saw a change in slogans from 'Bhupesh Hai to Bharosa Hai' to 'Congress Sarkar, Bharose ka Sarkar'. The party leadership also made strategic changes, replacing Mohan Markam with Deepak Baij, but dropping Prem Sai Singh Tekam.

The Congress government had hoped to reap a rich harvest of its higher paddy procurement price. Its poll strategy revolved around this and its rural welfare schemes. And, this is where it bit the dust. Paddy support price and bonus are considered the bedrock of politics in Chhattisgarh as the fertile central plains account for 64 of the 90 assembly seats. In 2018, Congress had propped it up as its main poll plank, promising Rs 2,500 per quintal, and storming to power.

His party's candidate in Kanker scraped through with just 16 votes. With this victory, Agrawal became the eighth straight-term MLA and remained unbeaten since 1990.
