Chandrayaan-2 live updates: You've inspired us with your journey, Nasa tells Isro

Isro's plan to soft land Chandrayaan-2's Vikram module on the lunar surface did not go as per script in the early hours of Saturday, with the lander losing communication with ground stations during its final descent. Stay here for all live updates:

If you compare Chandrayaan-1 with Chandrayaan-2, the basic difference is that we will do a soft landing. The former was carried by PSLV and for the latter we have used GSLV Mk III, meaning we have more payload capability.

S Nambi Narayanan, ex-ISRO scientist

17:02 (IST) Sep 06

We're going to land at a place where no one else has gone before. We're confident about the soft landing. We're waiting for tonight. This would be a big event as PM Modi will also be coming tonight to watch the final descent of Chandrayaan-2.

K Sivan, Isro chief

Chandrayaan-2 is indigenous mission, milestone: Ex-ISRO scientist
"Chandrayaan-2 is an independent and indigenous mission of India as every design and technology was created by Indian scientists. When we postponed the mission, scientists reached the space centre within two hours to resolve the issue and with efforts of the whole team we are going to create history," former Isro scientist Ravi Gupta said while speaking to ANI.

Everything going according to plan, ISRO chief
"We are eagerly waiting for the event. Everything is going according to the plan," Isro chairman K Sivan said. The touch-down of 'Vikram' lander is scheduled between 1.30 am and 2.30 am on Saturday, followed by the rollout of rover 'Pragyan' between 5.30 a.m and 6.30 a.m. "Certainly there is lot of anxiety in the minds of the entire (Chandrayaan-2) team because it's a very complex operation and we are doing it for the first time," a senior official associated with the mission, said on condition of anonymity. "Everything... sensors, computers, command systems... has to work perfectly. But we are confident in the sense we have conducted a large number of simulations on the ground; it gives us the confidence it would go alright," the official said. He described the soft-landing as "almost like placing a baby on the cradle", and said, "there is certain amount of anxiety but there is no fear."

I have been regularly and enthusiastically tracking all updates relating to Chandrayaan - 2 since it was launched on 22nd July 2019
13:16 (IST) Sep 06

The youngsters with whom I will watch the special moments from the Isro Centre in Bengaluru are those bright minds who won the ISRO Space Quiz on MyGov. The large scale participation in this Quiz showcases the interest of the youth in science and space. This is a great sign!

PM Modi

13:16 (IST) Sep 06

I am extremely excited to be at the Isro Centre in Bengaluru to witness the extraordinary moment in the history of India’s space programme. Youngsters from different states will also be present to watch those special moments! There would also be youngsters from Bhutan.

Chandrayaan-2: What Pragyan will tell Vikram on the Moon
Vikram and Pragyan, two robots on a trip to the Moon, have completed 90% of their journey, having already reached the lunar orbit. After separating from the orbiter, to which they were attached from July 22 to September 2, they are poised to soft land (landing in a controlled manner) on the Moon on September 7. Read more

Vikram's final descent from the lunar orbit would've started from an altitude of 35km. As per Isro's plan, about 10 minutes after the descent is initiated, Vikram would have dropped to a height of 7.4km from the lunar surface. In the next 38 seconds, it will reach a height of 5km and another 89 seconds later Vikram's altitude will be 400m. Here, Vikram will hover for a few seconds to collect data before plunging to 100m in 66 seconds. Vikram's final descent from the lunar orbit would've started from an altitude of 35km. Isro considered that both the primary and backup site should have Sun's elevation at more than six degrees on the landing day to ensure enough illumination for the lunar craft to capture images. The lander has been taking pictures of the preferred landing sites since Tuesday.

At a height of 100m, Vikram will hover for a few seconds before the final descent. "Within each landing site, two zones are identified of size 500m x 500m, separated by 1.6km. The prime target will be the first zone," says an Isro paper.

Chandrayaan-2's preferred landing site is between two craters, Manzinus and Simpelius, about 350km north of Moon's south pole.

Isro had chosen a primary landing site and a secondary one, now Vikram will approach the primary landing site, which in turn has two landing zones. "Vikram will be selecting one of these landing zones at the primary site after analysing data at that moment," said an Isro scientist.

Forty-seven days after it left Earth, Chandrayaan-2 lander Vikram will decide on the exact landing spot on Moon when it would be 100m above the lunar surface between 1.30am and 2.30am on Saturday. If all goes well, it'll touch down 78 seconds later.
