Burglars break in at IB chief’s Guwahati home, probe launched

GUWAHATI: Suspected burglars allegedly broke into the residence of the director of Intelligence Bureau (IB), Tapan Kumar Deka, in Guwahati’s Hengerabari area on Sunday night following which police security was deployed since Monday.

Deka’s residence is located at Gopalkrishna Path in Hengerabari. Rupam Hazarika, OC of Dispur police station, said an investigation had been initiated to catch the suspects and ascertain if anything was stolen. “An analysis of CCTV visuals will be done,” he added."

Meanwhile, a top source from the police department said the building was new and nobody was residing there. There were no security personnel earlier in the residence, the source said, adding that the IB director’s original residence is elsewhere.

Locals of Gopalkrishna Path alleged that petty crimes like theft and chain-snatching are common in the locality. “The police patrolling parties never enter the bylane. They should patrol the bylane, too, to curb petty crimes as there is always a possibility that they may commit big crimes,” a resident said. Adding that the boundary wall of the campus was not that high, and any miscreant could cross the same and enter, the resident said: “We have heard the incident happened late at night. ”
