NEW DELHI: A Border Security Force (BSF) officer was killed after a fire broke out at a fuel depot in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, officials said.
The incident occurred at the Bankra border outpost (BOP) in Hingalganj along the India-Bangladesh border. The outpost is part of the 77th Battalion of the BSF.
Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Jagi Ram was trapped inside the fuel dump after a blast triggered a massive fire, leading to his death. The depot was used to fuel BSF boats that patrol the riverine areas of the Sundarbans.
Officials said there were no other casualties or injuries in the incident.
Jagi Ram had joined the force in 1990.
Police and BSF authorities are conducting an inquiry into the incident, officials added.
