NEW DELHI: The pilot of the Mirage-2000 multi-role fighter, which crashed near its Gwalior base on Wednesday night, was found dead near the wreckage in the early hours of Thursday. "Squadron Leader M M Tiwari's body was found along with the aircraft at a place called Zora Kasba, 60 km west of Gwalior, after midnight. Though a court of inquiry will ascertain the exact reason, preliminary reports indicate it could be a case of pilot disorientation,"said a senior IAF officer. Spatial disorientation and poor situational awareness is quite a frequent phenomenon during combat flying.
Combat manoeuvres in a supersonic fighter, in fact, even exposes the pilot to dynamic gravitational forces (G-forces), which decrease blood pressure in the head. This can lead to loss of vision, 'grey-outs', 'black-outs' or even 'G-LOC' (G-induced loss of consciousness). The Mirage-2000s, in themselves, have a much better flight safety record when compared to other fighters like MiGs and Jaguars.
