Narayana Murthy: IT's ethics on top

Lack of ethics is one of the main problems of politics in India today. It leads to corruption and the obvious result is inefficiency.

To counter this, I would like someone like Narayana Murthy as my leader. He has been a very successful entrepreneur who has run Infosys innovatively and built a world-class organisation.

While doing so, he has been very ethical, a rare quality in India today. He has been very sensitive to his employees and through the stock option plan, even made his driver a millionaire.

Unlike many others, he has not amassed wealth and kept it only for himself, but has distributed it. He has always stood for certain values like simplicity, which is very much in keeping with our Indian ethos.

And appropriate for our country too, considering it has a large number of people below the poverty line. Another admirable quality about Narayana Murthy is that he has not clung on to his position in Infosys, but has stepped down to play a very useful role: that of a mentor.

This proves that he would consult and take the opinion of the right people in running the state.

He could help India tap its rich potential and create wealth. Since it has been accepted that 80 to 85 per cent of what the government collects is wasted due to inefficiency and corruption, it is high time we had a leader who is capable and ethical to see that India distributes its wealth among the have-nots in a more humane way.

Every day we hear of scams, and people have lost faith in our politicians. A person like Narayana Murthy would restore that faith. He is committed to good governance. As a leader, he will work for a rigorous standard of governance at all levels.

He also roots for the secular way of life. With his belief in the need for communal harmony, he will work to preserve the multicultural heritage of India.

I would expect a combination of successful entrepreneurship and ethics to bring in accountability into the system, which we lack so badly today.

(Anu Aga is chairperson, Thermax Group)
