CHENNAI: With northeast monsoon season's first cyclone likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday, IMD has upgraded its rain alert for Chennai to orange for the next two days. There are chances of heavy to very heavy rainfall of 12-20cm in 24 hours across Tamil Nadu, reports U Tejonmayam.

IMD has sounded an orange alert for Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet, apart from a red alert for Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai, which may receive extremely heavy spells on Nov 27.

As of Tuesday, the system, which intensified into a deep depression 800km south-southeast of Chennai, is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm on Nov 27 and move towards the Tamil Nadu coast. If the cyclone forms, it will be called Fengal.
