Migraine affects more than 10 million people in the UK. Sometimes, these episodes of headache can shrink worlds, end careers and even derail futures. The internet seems to have found a new remedy for migraine attacks. Many TikTok users are claiming that the ‘McMigraine’ hack works exceptionally well for these migraine headaches. But does it really? In a video shared on Facebook, Dr Myro Figura, a board-certified anaesthetist based in Los Angeles, California, has weighed in on the viral hack. What is the ‘McMigraine’ hack? The ‘McMigraine’ hack is a viral TikTok trend claiming that a simple McDonald’s meal can cure migraines more effectively than prescription medication. The ‘McMigraine meal’ consists of a large Coca-Cola and a large order of McDonald’s fries, items typically purchased together as part of a combo meal. According to countless social media users, consuming this unlikely combination provides rapid migraine relief. The trend gained significant traction after a woman posted a video asking, “Alright, can somebody please tell me the science of why McDonald’s Coke and large fries cure my migraines in a way that no medication ever will?” But does this viral hack really work? If yes, how? What the ‘McMigraine’ meal doesWith many netizens claiming that the ‘McMigraine’ food combination ‘just works’, Dr Myro Figura explained the science behind it. According to him, this combination may work for a few reasons. The first reason has to do with psychology and reward: indulging in a favourite fast-food meal triggers a dopamine release. “It’s going to give you a dopamine hit that’s going to make anyone feel better after anything,” the doctor said. So eating this meal would create a sense of pleasure and well-being that can improve one’s mood. The second reason for this ‘relief’ is due to the caffeine in the Coke. “A large Coke is going to have 85 milligrams of caffeine. And that is more caffeine than the leading medication for migraines, including Excedrin,” he explained. So yes, the caffeine can calm your headache, especially a migraine. The French fries, it turns out, play an important role too. “Those French fries are going to have a ton of salt, which is going to hydrate you just like an electrolyte tablet would,” the doctor said. Electrolytes are crucial for hydration and cellular function, and dehydration is a known migraine trigger. So when this excess salt floods your system, there is a chance it could help.Another reason why this might work for some people is because of the carbs. “In some people, low blood sugar can provoke a migraine. Well, 140 grams of carbs is going to fix that real quick,” the doctor shared. While the McMigraine hack may contribute to migraine relief, it is not a substitute for professional medical advice. It may provide temporary relief for some, but it is not something that should be part of anyone’s regular or safe migraine treatment repertoire. If you suffer from chronic migraines, it is important that you consult a healthcare provider to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
