Why are manhole covers round and not square?

Manholes are an essential yet overlooked part of urban infrastructure. They provide access to the underground systems that are important for maintaining the flow of water, sewage, and electrical cables in cities. Without manholes, maintaining and repairing these systems would be incredibly difficult.

These manholes might not look as useful, but go far beyond just being a cover for a hole in the ground. They help the workers to find and fix the concealed underground networks that keep our cities running smoothly. Whether it's for drainage, sewage treatment, or electrical maintenance, manholes are the critical access points that make sure that these systems continue to function properly and safely.

While they may simply seem to dot the city streets, the importance of manholes and their role in urban planning cannot be overlooked, catering to their significanct role, even the smallest detail, such as their design, becomes a matter of functionality and safety. That brings us to the question, why are manhole covers round, and what makes this design so important? Here are some reasons for the same.

2/6

The round shape prevents covers from falling in the manholes

One of the most important reasons manhole covers are round is that a round shape can't fall into the hole. No matter how you rotate or angle a round cover, it will always fit securely on top of the manhole. Contrastingly, if the cover were square or rectangular, it could be turned in such a way that its diagonal would be smaller than the sides of the opening, which could make it fall through. So, this is like a safety feature that is used to avoid accidents.

3/6

This design is simple to manufacture and economical

It is simpler and less expensive to make round covers as compared to square covers. Round covers can be produced from a single mold, therefore they make the production easier. Round manhole covers are also more convenient to handle and ship. The round shape gives symmetry, which can be rolled on the ground, thus making it easier to transport and put it into position. Such practicality makes round covers an undisputed winner in terms of practicality in usage during maintenance and installation.

4/6

Round shape distributes the stress evenly

Round covers distribute the weight and pressure of traffic more evenly over the surface. This is important in keeping the manhole cover stable under vehicle and pedestrian pressure. The round shape enables an even distribution of force, which reduces the possibility of cracking or damage. Square or rectangular covers, however, may be subjected to more concentrated pressure at the corners, raising the risk of failure or breaking under heavy loads.

5/6

Round manhole covers are easier to maintain

Round manhole covers are generally easier to remove and replace compared to square ones. Since there are no corners or edges to align, workers can use a variety of tools, such as levers or lifts, to pop the round cover off without worrying about precise alignment. This makes maintenance operations quicker and safer. Also, because of the simple shape, there is less wear and tear on the edges, ensuring that the covers last longer and require fewer repairs.

6/6

Round shape is a standard design

The round design of manhole covers has become a standard through years of historical precedent. Over time, round manhole covers have proven to be the most practical and efficient design, and cities around the world have adopted them for consistency and reliability. As a result, engineers and manufacturers continue to adhere to this tried-and-true method of construction, ensuring that round covers remain the norm in urban infrastructure. This makes it easier to replace or repair manhole covers with a consistent, proven design.

In addition to all the reasons stated in the article, manholes are circular because people are more or less cylindrical. Incidentally, the manhole for the sump in our house is square and understandably has a square cover.
