The 67-year-old Caltech research scientist at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center was found shot dead on his porch from a torso gunshot wound; paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, according to the L.A. County coroner, as per an LA Times report.

He led research on water detection on exoplanets

Grillmair pioneered water detection on an exoplanet via a 2007 paper, earning NASA's 2011 medal, and named galactic streams formed from Milky Way collisions.

Suspect arrested linked to past encounters

Freddy Snyder, 29, from Llano, was arrested and charged with Grillmair's murder, carjacking, and first-degree burglary, with $2 million bail, according to the LA County Sheriff's Department via CBS reports.

On December 20, Grillmair called deputies to remove Snyder from his property; Snyder had fled but was later nabbed nearby for weapons violations.
