Who is Sendil Palani? Tesla VP and finance genius who quit after 17 years
Tesla’s long-time finance leader, Sendil Palani, has stepped away from the electric vehicle giant after a marathon 17-year run that included everything from the company’s near‑death days to its current progress and push into AI.
His farewell has drawn attention not only because it comes at a time when Tesla is facing tough competition in the EV market, but also because Elon Musk himself shared a heartfelt post for Palani.
In his post, he wrote that “my latest chapter at Tesla has come to a close,” signalling the end of a long internal journey that spanned multiple roles and eras at the firm.
He recalled that period under “Tesla Deathwatch,” saying the company “barely survived Christmas of 2008” and that “I slept under my desk in San Carlos, CA at least once, and I wasn’t the only one,” telling how precarious Tesla’s situation was at the time.
Before rising to the vice‑president level, he held several finance and operations roles, including Senior Financial Analyst, Manufacturing Project Manager, Senior Finance Manager, Director, and Senior Director, steadily gaining influence as Tesla moved from startup to global automaker.
In his farewell message, Palani went beyond personal memories to reflect on Tesla’s mission. He wrote that “Tesla’s mission is so ambitious and complex that any narrative about the company is naturally an oversimplification,” urging people to “seek the truth about the company”.
He also praised the workforce, noting that while many firms have hard‑working employees, “few have the level of commitment and collaboration of the Tesla team,” and he thanked Musk for his “endless love of humanity”.
His departure also adds to a list of senior exits at the company in recent years, including figures such as Omead Afshar and key leaders in software and robotics.
