Watch: Elephant strolls through busy Haridwar market– what it does next stuns everyone
Haridwar, known for its spiritual aura and the sacred Ganga, recently went viral– this time not for a religious ritual but for a rather unexpected guest. A video captured an elephant casually strolling through a busy market, grabbing a bag of flour from a shop, and walking away like it owned the place.
While the clip amused many online, it sheds light on a growing issue: the shrinking space for wildlife. As forests continue to disappear and cities expand, wild animals like elephants are increasingly forced into human settlements.
Haridwar, in particular, has been dealing with a frequent visitor– a 40-year-old male elephant that seems to have made the town its new territory, according to a report presented by TOI. Unlike most wild elephants that briefly pass through city outskirts, this one appears unusually comfortable in urban surroundings.
Watch the viral video:
It’s been spotted wandering not only through markets but also residential areas and even entered a private hospital in Bahadrabad. Thankfully, it caused no harm and quietly walked out, but its growing presence in crowded places has started to raise concerns.
Although the tusker has shown no signs of aggression, its unpredictable movements in public spaces are worrying both locals and authorities. With large gatherings like the Kanwar Yatra and Kumbh Mela approaching, the need for action has become more urgent.
Vaibhav Kumar, Haridwar’s divisional forest officer, told TOI, “This tusker prefers staying in the city, roaming its streets and markets. We plan to relocate it permanently after installing a radio collar.”
The incident may have sparked laughter online, but it serves as a serious reminder of the growing conflict between wildlife and urban expansion. As cities like Haridwar continue to grow, finding sustainable solutions to protect both animal and human communities is becoming more crucial than ever.
