Whoever thought Mark Zuckerberg would sue Meta? But it seems the time has come. In a pretty ironic and interesting scenario, an Indianapolis lawyer who shares the same name as the Meta CEO has filed a lawsuit against Facebook.
Mark Zuckerberg has sued the social media platform for repeatedly suspending his account, mistaking him for the company's chief executive. The bankruptcy lawyer claimed that his verified account has been suspended for more than 15 years, costing him clients and ad funds. In May, he shared that his firm's business page was removed, causing him a loss of $11,000 in advertising.
He added that Meta wrongly flags him for "impersonating a celebrity," despite the name being his real identity. "It's not funny," he said. "Not when they take my money. This really pissed me off,” Zuckerberg told Indianapolis-based 13WTHR.
"And using a false name! Which I've had way longer than he has," he added. "I've got better things to do than sue Facebook. They have more money and more lawyers and more resources than I do. I'd rather not pick a fight with them, but I don't know how else to make them stop!"
Why is he suing Meta?
Zuckerberg didn't immediately take Meta to court. Over the years, he consistently contacted the company regarding his account suspensions.
While the company apologised, the suspensions didn't stop, eventually pushing him to act.
"I did everything they asked me to do, like I always do. They ask you to appeal if you think your suspension is not proper. I filed the proper appeals with them the very next day and I've heard nothing from them and it's been four months. The last time they did it, it was over six months before they turned my account back on. So I don't know how else to get their attention," Zuckerberg said.
What does Zuckerberg want?
Well, allegedly, the repeated bans have cost him client communication and thousands of dollars he invested in ads for his law practice. Thus, in the lawsuit, Zuckerberg is demanding that the company permanently restore his account and reimburse him for lost ad funds, attorney fees and maintains that he has a strong chance of winning the case.
Netizens react to Mark Zuckerberg suing Meta
Netizens have been reacting to this ironic case with amusement and understanding.
"When your name is Mark Zuckerberg and Meta calls you an impersonator, irony writes the lawsuit itself. Identity should be more than an algorithm’s guess. Sometimes, truth is stranger than tech—and funnier than fiction," wrote a person on X.
"Imagine being Mark Zuckerberg and getting banned for being Mark Zuckerberg 😂," quipped another.
"Yo, we have multiple Mark Zuckerbergs?? This is new. You 2 need to grab a cup of coffee one day & share some banter & a laugh... Decide how to settle this, like gentlemen: "bro - bro". Why fight your own reflection or image? You're only going to break the mirror+hurt yourself😐" wrote another amusingly.
"bro cant even have his own name," and "They look alike 😂🤣" added others.
