Tech enthusiast Shishir began an online discussion on X after noticing an intriguing detail in the iPhone Clock app icon. "Wait… the Clock icon on iOS ticks like quartz watch in low power mode and mechanical in normal mode??? That's ridiculous attention to detail," he posted.

In normal mode, the second hand glides smoothly, just like on a high-end mechanical watch. Switch to Low Power Mode, and it ticks forward one second at a time, resembling a quartz watch.

Shishir's post quickly gained traction, igniting debate among users about whether this was intentional design or practical functionality.

Smart design for battery efficiency

It looks like a practical choice for power saving, rather than a deliberate hidden feature. "It's not an attention to detail, it's an easy point to save battery! When you animate the entire flow, that is more pixels having to turn on and off.

When you cut each second, the pixels are doing less, saving battery life," one commenter explained, on the post. Another observed, "I think it's merely due to the refresh rate of the always-on screen that goes down to 1/s". A third wrote, "It's probably not attention to detail but rather saving some battery by processing lesser frames".

Apple's Low Power Mode cuts background tasks for longevity, "When the battery level gets low, Low Power Mode reduces background activity on iPhone and iPad devices to extend battery life," states their support page, referenced in reports.
