US tourist calls Indians “lazy and out of shape,” social media explodes
A short video from Jaipur has gone viral on social media and sparked a lot of discussion. What began as a tourist casually sharing his thoughts while walking to Amber Fort soon turned into a nationwide debate about fitness, lifestyle, and how Indians are viewed by outsiders. The clip received lakhs of views and drew both support and criticism online.
The video was shared by an American tourist, identified online as Charlie Evans. While walking along the steep path leading to Amber Fort, he recorded people who had stopped midway to take a break. In the video, Evans described Indians as “lazy” and “out of shape.” He also claimed that many people were not willing to “go the extra mile.”
Evans mentioned that the walk to the fort usually takes about 20 minutes. He questioned why some visitors had paid for entry if they were not planning to complete the climb. He also said that several people asked him how far the walk was, even though they were already on the route.
He repeated his point by saying that seeing people resting halfway “proved” what he had said earlier. He added that many visitors were “sitting, smoking, or drinking beverages instead of continuing to the top.”
The video spread quickly on Instagram and gained lakhs of views. Many users criticised Evans for making broad comments about Indians based on what he saw at a single tourist spot. Others pointed out that factors like age, health issues, hot weather, and the steep climb at Amber Fort could easily explain why people stopped to rest.
Some users partly agreed with the tourist. One person said they felt hurt by the remarks but felt that “there was some truth to them.” Another user shared their own experience of climbing the fort while carrying a baby and said that “Indians need to rethink their diet and lifestyle choices.”
However, many users strongly disagreed. Some pointed out that cigarettes and soft drinks were introduced by outsiders. Others suggested that Evans should visit hill states like Uttarakhand to understand how unfair the “lazy” label really is.
While a few people felt fitness is sometimes ignored in India, many said the comments were stereotypical and insensitive. What started as a short tourist video has now become a larger conversation about judging people based on limited experiences.
