The living 'phoenix' bird that sets huge forests on fire

The natural world surprises us in many ways that go beyond our expectations. While many animals have some interesting survival tactics, only a few are as unique as the black kite’s relationship with fire.

Far from a creature of legend, this bird is real, and its behavior of using fire to hunt is just one example of how animals can adapt to survive. Many of the black kite’s fire-related tactics have been observed mainly in Australia and have been passed down through generations of Indigenous knowledge.

The bird that carries fire

The black kite is a member of a special group of raptors known as ‘firehawk raptors,’ which have this spot for their extraordinary use of fire as a tool. According to researchers and as seen in videos, these birds have been observed picking up burning sticks and carrying them to dry, grassy areas, where they drop the sticks to ignite fires. This unusual behavior helps flush out small animals from hiding, making it easier for the kites to catch their prey. This fire-foraging method is an example of the bird’s excellent intelligence and the ability to adapt to its environment.

The black kite is not alone in this unique behaviour. The firehawk raptors group also includes the Whistling Kite and the Brown Falcon. This fire-starting technique has been widely observed in parts of Australia, where the indigenous peoples have long understood and incorporated these behaviors into their connection with the land. These birds, with these skills, have been a part of the region’s history for thousands of years.

The bird has some strategic understanding

But this is dangerous behaviour too!

While this fire-starting behavior is unique in the black kite’s survival kit, it also has significant implications for the ecosystems they inhabit. On the one hand, it makes the kite a fire-foraging predator, but on the other hand, it raises concerns about the impact of intentional fires on local areas as these birds drop burning sticks in their talons, ending up igniting fire in the drier grass and plants.
