Dan Rivera, the Army veteran paranormal investigator and beloved “Annabelle doll handler” for the New England Society for Psychic Research (NESPR), died on July 13 during the “Devils on the Run” tour in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Today, authorities have confirmed that his death was due to natural, cardiac-related causes.
According to reports by People.com, Adams County Coroner Francis Dutrow said,“Mr. Rivera had a known history of cardiac issues, which were consistent with the findings.” He also made an important clarification, “It is also confirmed that Annabelle was not present in the room at the time of his passing”.
The Pennsylvania State Police report further notes that Rivera was discovered by hotel staff after returning to his room feeling unwell the same day. “Nothing unusual or suspicious was observed at the scene,” officials stated.
Rivera wasn’t just any investigator. As a senior lead for NESPR, a group founded decades ago by famous paranormal researchers Ed and Lorraine Warren, he studied and brought to light some of the most infamous artifacts in horror lore, including the Annabelle doll, which inspired The Conjuring film franchise.

As reported by People.com, Kelly and Wade, his colleagues, praised him in public statements. NESPR remembered Rivera as “a deeply compassionate, loyal and dedicated friend,” whose passion for the paranormal was based in a genuine desire to “educate, help and connect with others”.
The absence of the Annabelle doll from the room and the natural cause of death have helped put conspiracy theories to rest, at least officially. But the paranormal world is still fueled by mystery, and Rivera’s passing will likely remain a point of reflection for years to come.
