When you ask for a spicy buffalo or creamy ranch sauce to go with your chicken wings or burgers, you certainly don’t expect it to come with an extra, unwanted and unlabelled ingredient. But that’s exactly the kind of stomach-churning surprise awaiting at a popular fast-food chain in Chicago (as mentioned in the social media post). A video of a massive rat making its way through the condiments section of a restaurant is going viral on the internet. The video, said to be captured by a McDonald’s employee, is now going viral on the internet.
The video shows a rat climbing and moving through various condiment containers and supplies in the eatery. The footage, reportedly shared by an employee’s account, shows the rodent crawling through food items and condiments that are stored or prepared. The exact date and time of the incident remain unclear; however, one X user asked Grok to locate the eatery. “It’s the McDonald’s at 87th Street and Kedzie Avenue in Chicago,” the AI assistant suggested.
“A McDonald’s employee captures video of a giant rat climbing through the condiments at a Chicago McDonald’s,” the video caption reads.

The incident has raised serious questions about the restaurant’s food safety protocols and pest management systems. Rodents roaming through food service establishments pose significant health risks, potentially contaminating food products with bacteria and pathogens that can cause foodborne illness. Netizens have urged the attention of the Health Department. The video is flooded with comments.
One netizen pointed at the timing of the video coming out, referring to the hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship. “Totally a great time to be publishing this while that whole cruise ship thing is going on,” an X user wrote. Another said, “Real talk. Rats carry stuff like hantavirus or just gross bacteria, but one rogue rodent doesn't tank a whole chain – still billions of safe meals served yearly. Kinda reminds you why some peeps go air fryer at home.”
A third quipped, “McRat on the menu.” Another asked why the employee was recording the video: “For all y’all ‘Why is she just filming??’ The job title was crew member/cashier, not pest control/rat trapper. Being exposed to potentially deadly diseases was not in there either.” A fourth user quipped, “On the bright side, the rat seems healthy and happy.”
This incident adds to a growing list of pest-related problems reported at various fast-food establishments across the country.
