Sambhar lake bursts in shades of pink as Flamingos migrate to Indian mainland
Flamingos are making a lake in India look bright ‘pink’, and it is attracting thousands of travellers from across the world!
Sambhar Salt Lake in Rajasthan, the country's largest inland saltwater gem, turns into a natural wonder as migratory birds flock in, painting the horizon with colour.
The brightly lit flocks feeding, resting, and flying over the pink-tinged waters pull in photographers, nature fans, and researchers. "The lake offers a breathtaking panoramic view that makes the presence of the flamingos even more magical," Dadhich added to ANI.
As India's biggest inland salt lake and a Ramsar wetland site, Sambhar supports diverse birdlife, with experts crediting good algae and brine shrimp for the crowds, echoed in The Better India. A January 2025 census tallied over 1 lakh migratory birds, mostly flamingos, up sharply from prior years due to monsoon gains.
Another aspect this spectacle brings attention to is the growing need to balance tourism with conservation. While the pink-hued lake has become a magnet for travellers and photographers, experts often caution that excessive human activity can disturb migratory birds. Responsible tourism, restricted access to sensitive zones, and awareness among visitors are crucial to ensure that Sambhar Salt Lake remains a safe winter home for flamingos in the years to come.

Flamingo invasion turns lake pink
Thousands of migratory flamingos have descended on Rajasthan's Sambhar Salt Lake near Jaipur, creating a stunning pink sea that draws crowds of birdwatchers and tourists. The annual event follows the Central Asian Flyway, with birds arriving from distant spots like Russia, Siberia, and Mongolia to feed in the saline shallows spanning about 240 square kilometers. What experts say about Flamingos coming to India
Bird expert Gaurav Dadhich, who has studied the area for over 12 years, told ANI that the migration kicks off in October and runs through March, peaking early in the season. He noted large groups of Lesser and Greater Flamingos, plus ducks and other species, with over 300 bird types documented at Sambhar. "At present, around 2 to 2.5 lakh flamingos can be spotted in the lake area," Dadhich said, linking the surge to higher rainfall boosting water levels and food supplies. Favorable conditions this year have made it a prime wintering spot. The area has turned into a tourist attraction

Why do so many of these flamingos flock India
These birds travel to huge distances for Sambhar's nutrient-rich waters, staying through winter before heading back. Unusually good conditions, like steady water and plentiful food, have led to bigger flocks and longer visits this season. The sight not only boosts local tourism but also brings to light the lake's role in conservation along key migration paths.Top Comment
