Rare historic coins that made people millionaire

When it comes to rare collectibles, certain items are tagged with sky-high prices, and those include precious stones, historical finds, rare-minted coins and currency notes that are no longer in use. These aren’t just old bits of metal, but tiny time machines, which have special stories that connect them to a specific moment in history. What makes these coins rare might be a minting mistake, a design that was never supposed to be released, or a coin created to impress royalty that also makes these small artifacts worth millions.

Collectors are attracted to these coins not just for their beauty or value, but for their rarity and mystery surrounding them as some of these were never meant to enter the public's hands and the others might belong to a nation’s ancient currency. And yet, all of them have survived wars, law changes, and time itself which makes them priceless in more ways than one. Here are 4 coins from the US that are worth millions of dollars.

The 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar

The 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar isn’t just rare but an iconic one, as it was the very first silver dollar issued by the United States Mint, it marks the official beginning of US coinage. The coin shows Lady Liberty with flowing hair on one side and an eagle on the other. It was made up of 90% silver and 10% copper. It’s estimated that only about 140 of these coins still exist today. In 2013, one of these was sold for over $10 million, making it the most valuable silver coin ever sold.

1933 Double Eagle

The 1933 Double Eagle is a $20 gold coin that carries more drama than some thrillers. While over 4,45,000 were minted, none of them were legally released due to the US abandoning the gold standard. Almost all were ordered to be melted down but a few of them somehow escaped. Because of legal restrictions, owning one is tricky. Despite that, in 2021, one of these coins was sold at an auction for a massive $18.9 million, which also makes it one of the most expensive coins ever sold in history.

4/5

1913 Liberty Head Nickel

The 1913 Liberty Head Nickel wasn’t supposed to exist as the US Mint had already switched to the Buffalo Nickel in 1912, yet somehow, five Liberty Head nickels were secretly made in 1913. Nobody really knows why, which also makes this coin mysterious apart from being just a rare one. These nickels have passed through the hands of some of the world’s most famous collectors. Their value has steadily risen over time, and one of them was sold for over $4.5 million in 2018.

1804 Draped Bust Silver Dollar

Called “The King of American Coins,” the 1804 Draped Bust Silver Dollar is the crown jewel of US numismatics. Contrasting to its name, it wasn’t actually minted in 1804 but was struck decades later in the 1830s for diplomatic gifts. Only 15 of these are known to exist, making them incredibly rare and a favorite among elite collectors for its beauty and prestige. One among these was sold for more than $7 million at auction.
