AI whiz Ruoming Pang moved from Apple to Meta in July 2025, then to OpenAI after just seven months, despite Meta's massive $200 million-plus package over years. According to The Information report, OpenAI pursued him for months before he joined last week, role undisclosed. According to a Bloomberg report, he also served a brief Meta stint at Superintelligence Labs, overseeing AI infrastructure with a notably high package. This exit piles on Meta's talent woes, as even lavish offers can't lock in large-scale AI pros amid fierce rivalry.

Pang’s educational qualifications

Pang's resume has academic and professional experiences from elite institutions, including bachelor's from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, master's from USC, PhD from Princeton.

Over 15 years at Google, he co-founded Zanzibar (2012-2017), the authorization backbone for Google's services, and built search systems on Bigtable, as per his LinkedIn account and an Indian Express report.


At Apple for four-plus years, he led 100+ engineers on foundation models powering Apple Intelligence across devices.

He is an example of how versatility will lead AI in future

Pang represents a trend of top talent gravitating toward organisations equipped to scale advanced AI. Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously recruited for Superintelligence Labs, bringing in figures like former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ChatGPT co-creator Engj Zhao, yet struggles to retain them.
