‘It’s understandable’: Viral clip shows Danish minister rushing out to smoke after Rubio–Vance Greenland talks
The meeting itself was closed-door and tense. The moment after was anything but subtle. A viral clip circulating online this week shows Denmark’s foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen briskly exiting the White House and immediately lighting a cigarette, a scene many viewers read as wordless commentary on a fraught diplomatic exchange involving Greenland and the Trump administration.
Rasmussen and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt had just wrapped a high-stakes meeting with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where the two European officials pushed back against President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in US control of Greenland.
According to a report by the New York Post, Rasmussen and Motzfeldt met privately for roughly 80 minutes with Vance and Rubio. The White House, State Department and the vice president’s office declined to comment immediately, and Trump later said he was awaiting a briefing.
The talks came amid mounting tension after Trump again floated the idea of acquiring Greenland, a position that has unsettled European allies and raised concerns within NATO.
Moments after leaving the building, Rasmussen, known for being a chain smoker, jogged toward a nearby parking area with a cigarette already lit. He was seen offering a cigarette and lighter to Motzfeldt, who appeared visibly tense.
The visual sparked a wave of commentary online, with many framing the cigarette as diplomatic body language.
One user wrote, “Sounds like a smoky diplomatic summit!”
Another added, “he really needed that smoke.”
A third reaction read, “Lars Løkke Rasmussen walked out of his sit-down with Vance and Rubio and immediately sparked a cigarette on White House grounds. That's the diplomatic equivalent of ‘Jesus fucking Christ’ without saying a word. Denmark just called in French, German, and Swedish troops for military exercises while Trump keeps floating takeover scenarios. Now their foreign minister needs nicotine to process whatever the hell just got said in that room.”
Others were even blunter.
“He’s just trying to process the idiocracy that is the current US administration,” one user said.
Another commented, “Danish FM chain-smoking on White House lawn right after meeting Vance & Rubio is the most relatable diplomatic body language of 2026. Nothing says ‘we just got threatened with annexation again’ like lighting up before you even reach the car.”
After the meeting, Rasmussen publicly confirmed that talks exposed serious differences between Washington and Copenhagen.
Denmark's foreign minister said there was a “fundamental disagreement” with the US over Greenland, describing the meeting with Vance and Rubio as “frank but constructive.” But he added that Trump was insisting on “conquering” Greenland, something Rasmussen said was “totally unacceptable.”
“We made it very, very clear that this is not in the interest of [Denmark],” he said.
Trump later reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland, further rattling allies across Europe. While the hour-long meeting failed to produce a breakthrough, all sides agreed to establish a high-level working group to discuss the future of the territory.
