Google's iconic "G' logo gets a new makeover after a decade

For the first time in nearly a decade, Google has updated its standalone ‘G’ logo. This multicoloured icon that users see across its apps and browser tabs. While the change may look small at first glance, it represents a greater design shift within the company.

The new look includes smoother versions of the iconic colours of Google. Though it might look the same, it has a larger purpose to align with Google’s new tools.

Though the six-letter Google wordmark remains untouched, this redesign hints at the company’s ongoing focus on consistency across its products, especially as AI becomes more central to its strategy. The gradient gives the icon a more dynamic, modern feel without losing the recognisable colour scheme that has defined Google for years. Lets now what’s changed and what it could mean for Google’s branding direction.

2/6

A fresh take on a familiar icon

Google’s revised ‘G’ icon swaps its old four solid colour segments for a new, blended gradient. Red now fades into yellow, yellow into green, and green into blue. The result is a smoother, more fluid look that still feels recognisably Google, but with a modernised twist.

3/6

Inspired by Gemini AI branding

The gradient design shows the visual style seen in Google’s Gemini AI platform, where the blue and pink colours blend into each other, also hinting at a more unified design language across its products. As AI is gradually becoming central to Google’s identity, this design choice might be a hint towards the subtle alignment between its core apps and AI offerings.

Change spotted in the iOS Search app

So far, the new gradient ‘G’ icon has only appeared in the Google Search app for iOS. It remains to be seen whether other apps like Gmail, Drive, or Maps will follow suit and design patterns in the new logo. For now, the rollout appears limited and hasn’t been officially announced by Google.

The main Google logo remains unchanged

The most important aspect to be noticed is that the main six-letter Google wordmark, on the Google homepage, that was introduced in 2015 with the Product Sans font, stays the same. This redesign is focused only on the standalone ‘G’ icon, which appears in smaller spaces like app icons, browser tabs, and quick links.

This design is a get-go with time

While this change is not a total redesign of the logo, the new ‘G’ icon represents Google’s effort to stay visually fresh and aligned with current design trends. It’s a small change, especially given its size on most screens, but one that reflects the company’s ever-changing branding in an AI-driven era and modernisation.
