​Nitish Kumar: The chief minister of Bihar

Nitish Kumar, the current Chief Minister of Bihar and JD(U) (Janata Dal United) leader was born into a freedom fighter’s family in Bakhtiarpur in March 1, 1951. His father, Kaviraj Ram Lakhan Singh, was an Ayurvedic practitioner and had participated in the Indian independence movement. Growing up in a politically aware household, Nitish Kumar was exposed to the values of service and leadership from an early age. His birthplace, Bakhtiarpur, is a town with historical significance, and it was here that his educational journey began. The town’s rich cultural heritage and the emphasis on education in his family environment played a pivotal role in shaping his aspirations.

Early schooling

The young Nitish showed promise in his studies from the outset, attending the local schools in Bakhtiarpur. His early education was marked by a disciplined approach to learning, instilled in him by his parents. The schools in Bakhtiarpur during the 1950s and 1960s, though not as resource-rich as urban centers, provided a solid foundation in the basics of literacy and numeracy. Teachers recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue higher education, which was not very common in the rural settings of Bihar at the time.

High school education

Nitish Kumar’s high school years at Shree Ganesh High School were formative in honing his intellectual capabilities. His performance in the secondary school leaving examinations was exemplary, paving the way for his entry into one of the premier science colleges in the state.

In 1972, Nitish Kumar graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the esteemed Bihar College of Engineering, now known as the National Institute of Technology Patna (NIT, Patna). During his years at the college, Nitish Kumar was deeply involved in student activities and was a member of various technical clubs.
