Amid the festivities, a man has stood out for his extraordinary achievement. Dave Purchase, a 63-year-old from Gloucester, UK, turned the docks into a winter wonderland party with his epic singathon.

What began as a midnight challenge became a community bash, complete with choirs, costumed fans, and pure adrenaline. It's about that unbreakable holiday magic that keeps us singing through the tough moments.

Man sets record for singing 42 hours straight

Dave Purchase, a 63-year-old café owner from Gloucester, UK, has smashed a Guinness World Record by singing Christmas songs for a massive 42 hours straight. According to a SWNS report, he kicked off at midnight on Wednesday, December 10, and sang through until 6 pm on Friday, December 12, belting out 684 tunes without wrecking his voice. From Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" to Wham!'s "Last Christmas," Dave repeated 38 classics—like "Jingle Bells" and Elton John's "Step Into Christmas"—18 times each to hit the mark.

Local choirs joined in

The event at Gloucester's docks drew crowds, including a dementia choir and kids' choir who joined in for support. Locals showed up in costumes as festive characters, turning it into a buzzing party. Dave called it more than a vocal marathon: "It was not just a vocal challenge but also a physical one," he told SWNS news agency.


By hour 32, things got brutal. "I nearly gave up at about 4 o’clock on Friday morning," Dave shared with SWNS. "I felt as I couldn’t carry on because I was hallucinating with the lack of sleep. I was falling to sleep singing the songs." He pushed on for another 10 hours, fueled by the growing crowd: "When the crowd started to come into the venue, the adrenaline took over."

He followed strict Guinness rules

Guinness rules kept him strict, five-minute breaks per hour, or a 20-minute one after four straight hours, plus just 20 seconds between songs. "Apart from the lower register of my voice, which had gone, and the falsetto part, which was slightly gone, the middle range of my vocal was fine," he explained to SWNS.

Dave's singing roots run deep

He told SWNS, "I started to sing, and I used to sing for hours when I was a kid. Singing used to be my passion. I did cruise ships and theatre, so I had a background in singing".

He dreamed this up as a "nutty event" to boost trade at Gloucester Docks, where he owns On Toast café. But it became a "brilliant" community hit. "People were part of something, they made friends... It was packed, and the actual electric atmosphere in the venue was fantastic," Dave added.


The previous record stood at 31 hours, set by Ewaoluwa Olatunji from Lagos, Nigeria, on December 27-28, 2023. She aimed to "promote peace and unity" and inspire youth, per Guinness World Records. Dave's team has sent videos, timesheets, photos, and reels to Guinness for official verification.
