Animals that rely on both land and water to survive

In the wild, survival often comes down to how well an animal can adapt. While some creatures are built for life on land and others are made for the water, a few special species have learned to live comfortably in both worlds. These animals have evolved to move easily between land and water, whether it’s to escape danger, hunt for food, or find shelter more effectively. This skill isn’t about showing off– it’s a smart survival strategy. For many of these animals, being able to switch between land and water isn’t just helpful, it’s essential. Let’s take a closer look at six amazing creatures that have mastered living in two very different environments.

2/7

Elephants

Despite their enormous size, elephants are naturally drawn to water. In the wild, you’ll often see herds wading into rivers, not just to cool off but also to swim across during their long journeys. The young calves love to splash and play, while the adults swim with clear purpose, using their trunks like snorkels to breathe.

3/7

Tigers

Unlike many wild cats, tigers don’t mind water at all. In fact, they often enjoy swimming, especially in the hot, humid parts of India. Whether cooling off in a pond or crossing a stream while patrolling their territory, tigers are at ease in the water. They even use it to their advantage, not just for moving around, but sometimes while hunting, too.

4/7

Crocodiles

Crocodiles are experts at staying still for long periods, and they’re perfectly built for both land and water. Their webbed feet and strong tails let them move smoothly and quietly underwater, while on land, they can move surprisingly fast when needed. They often rest on riverbanks but depend on water to hunt and stay hidden from prey.

5/7

Penguins

Penguins may look a bit clumsy when they walk on land, but in the water, they’re some of the fastest birds around. Their wings have turned into flippers, helping them ‘fly’ smoothly and quickly underwater. Swimming is how they catch fish and escape predators. On land, they mostly come ashore to breed and rest.

6/7

Hippos

Hippos spend much of their day underwater, but they don’t actually swim. Instead, they walk or push off the river or lake bottom. Even with their large, heavy bodies, they move smoothly in water, where they rest, stay cool, and communicate.

7/7

Otters

Otters are incredibly skilled at moving both on land and in water. Their webbed feet and sleek bodies let them swim swiftly through rivers and lakes. On land, they’re fast and agile too. Being able to switch easily between water and land is crucial for otters– they hunt in the water, build their homes on land, and raise their young in both places.
