Nature’s weirdest birth methods: 6 animals that break the rules

In a world where animal videos often go viral, one of the most surprising and lesser-known sides of wildlife is how different species give birth. While we all know how most mammals are born, nature has come up with many other, far more unusual ways for animals to bring new life into the world. Some of these birth methods are so unique, they feel unreal– but they’re completely natural. In fact, many of them are clever results of how animals have adapted over millions of years to survive in tough environments. From male animals carrying babies to newborns coming out of body parts you’d never expect, here are six creatures that prove birth in the animal kingdom is full of surprises.

2/7

Giraffes

Giraffe babies are born in a unique way. The mother giraffe gives birth while standing, so the newborn falls about six feet to the ground. This fall is safe and helps the baby start breathing and break the umbilical cord. Newborn giraffes weigh over 100 kg and are tall enough to look many adults in the eye. They begin walking just hours after birth. When it comes to mating, male giraffes check the female’s urine to see if she’s ready to mate. It sounds odd, but it’s a natural way for them to know in the wild.

3/7

Surinam Toads

The Surinam toad has a strange way of giving birth. After the eggs are fertilised, the father puts them on the mother's back. Then, her skin grows around each egg to protect it. When the babies are ready, they come out of her back through tiny holes. This keeps the eggs safe from predators in the wild.

4/7

Platypus

The platypus is different from most mammals. Instead of having live babies, the mother lays eggs and keeps them safe in a burrow. When the eggs hatch, she feeds her babies with milk that comes from her skin, not from nipples. Because of these special traits, the platypus belongs to a small group of egg-laying mammals called monotremes. It is unique because it has both reptile and mammal features.

5/7

Seahorses

In seahorses, the male is the one who gets pregnant. The female puts her eggs into a pouch on the male’s body. The eggs are fertilised and stay there until the babies are ready to be born. After a few weeks, the male lets hundreds or even thousands of tiny seahorses go into the ocean. This unusual role is also found in pipefish and sea dragons, which are related to seahorses.

6/7

Cichlids

In some cichlid fish, parents protect their fertilised eggs by carrying them in their mouths. This is called mouthbrooding. It keeps the eggs safe from animals that might eat them. Sometimes the father does this, and other times both parents share the job. While carrying the eggs, the adult fish doesn’t eat, so they don’t accidentally swallow their babies. It’s a careful way to keep the eggs safe and stay alive.

7/7

Cuckoo Catfish

The cuckoo catfish has a sneaky way of raising its young. When a cichlid fish is laying eggs, the female catfish quickly adds her own eggs to the mix. The cichlid doesn’t know the difference and picks up all the eggs, including the catfish eggs, to protect in her mouth. But the catfish eggs hatch sooner, and the baby catfish often eat the cichlid’s own babies. This quick trick lets the cuckoo catfish reproduce without having to take care of its young.
