2,18,993 biryani, iPhones, and gold! What Indians bought on New Year's Eve will shock you
New Year’s Eve turned into a huge night for food delivery as people stayed indoors, met friends and family, and ordered what they loved the most. All evening, Swiggy shared live updates on X, giving a real-time look at what people were buying. The numbers slowly showed how celebrations at home now include everything from hot meals to surprise gifts.
The biggest highlight of the night was the biryani. By 7:30 pm, Swiggy Food said that 2,18,993 plates of biryani had already been ordered. In a casual post, the platform wrote, “Abhi 7:30 bhi nahi baje hai aur 2,18,993 biryanis order ho chuki hai. king fr.”
As the evening went on, Swiggy kept sharing more figures. By 9:30 pm, the platform said that over 90,000 burgers had already been delivered. Swiggy also mentioned that 4,244 people ordered upma. In Bengaluru, 1,927 users ordered salad, while 9,410 people went for khichdi.
Desserts also saw strong demand. By 9:30 pm, there had already been 7,573 orders of gajar ka halwa.
Swiggy also pointed out that a large number of people placed orders for others in 2025. As shared by the platform, 6,67,04,007 people ordered food for someone else, showing how gifting food through delivery platforms has become common.
Apart from regular food deliveries, a few Instamart orders also stood out because of their value. Swiggy co-founder Phani Kishan A shared updates about some of these purchases.
He wrote, “Biggest single orders today, just in. A Bengaluru shopper picked up two iPhones for ₹1.8L. 2026 has officially arrived in style.”
He also shared one more update, saying, “Tonight’s most heartwarming Instamart stat. Nearly 1 in 9 NYE orders were placed for friends and family. Case in point: a Mumbai user received gold worth ₹1.45L from a loved one.”
From biryani and burgers to salads, khichdi, halwa, iPhones, and even gold, Swiggy’s live updates gave a simple picture of how many people chose to celebrate New Year’s Eve at home. The posts showed a mix of comfort food, festive sweets, and thoughtful gifts, all ordered on the same evening.
