2,000 products including Coca-Cola, Pringles, Skittles pulled from stores over rodent contamination

A major recall is grabbing headlines as nearly 2,000 products have been pulled from stores in the US. From snacks to cereals, drinks, pet food, and personal care items, many everyday products are now off the shelves. Authorities say the recall comes after a distribution center was found to be operating in unsafe conditions, raising concerns about contamination and hygiene.

Unsafe conditions trigger the recall

As reported by PEOPLE, the recall centers on Minneapolis-based Gold Star Distribution, Inc. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found the facility had “insanitary conditions, including the presence of rodent excreta, rodent urine, and bird droppings.”

The FDA added that the affected items may have been in contact with surfaces with airborne particles of animal waste. Such exposure can potentially lead to illnesses like salmonella or leptospirosis, a bacterial disease from contact with animal urine.

Understanding the health risk

As mentioned in the report, the FDA has given this recall a Class II classification. This means that the products “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” While serious illness is unlikely, consumers are advised to take precautions.

Snacks and cereals: Pringles, Takis, Jolly Ranchers, Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, Cheerios, Rice Krispies

Drinks: Gatorade, Coca-Cola, Smart Water and Arizona Iced Tea

Pantry staples: Heinz Ketchup, Crisco oil, cinnamon sticks

Other products: Pepto-Bismol, Axe body spray, Q-tip cotton swabs, Fancy Feast cat food, Gillette razors
