Deadly snakes on the move! Australians may soon face more encounters than ever; here’s why
Australia has long been associated with a wide range of venomous wildlife, particularly snakes. A recent international study now indicates that some of the country’s most dangerous snake species could gradually appear more frequently in populated coastal regions. The findings are based on climate modelling that tracks how environmental changes may alter natural habitats over time. As temperatures rise and rainfall patterns shift, species distribution is expected to change. This includes movement away from inland areas towards the eastern coastline, where population density is significantly higher. While the transition is expected to be gradual, experts suggest the trend is becoming increasingly evident and may influence how human populations interact with wildlife in the coming decades. Conservationists are closely monitoring these shifts to better understand long-term ecological balance and human impact on natural habitats worldwide.

Venomous snakes in Australia are moving toward coastal areas

According to the PLOS study, there is a gradual but noticeable trend of venomous snakes shifting towards the eastern part of Australia. The major cause of this phenomenon seems to be climate change. Due to the rising temperature and adverse changes in the environment, some species find themselves uncomfortable living in inland areas and would thus seek areas with relatively favourable conditions, such as coastal regions.
More than 500 species of medically important snakes for humans were analysed in this study across the world. The projection shows that in the future, the suitability of habitat in some areas will undergo a great deal of change, particularly in the Australian region, due to the shifting nature of the climate.

Eastern brown snake range expansion in Australia

The eastern brown snake is considered the species that has the greatest interaction with people in Australia. At present, this species is widespread in agricultural zones, grasslands, and urban outskirts. The snake species in question is extremely venomous and accounts for most cases of snakebites in the country. As per the findings of the study, the habitat of the eastern brown snake might cover an increased area southwards along the east coast of the continent. Such changes in the species range will be due to new environmental conditions that promote the survival of this species in different locations. The increase in the territory inhabited by the snake might result in a greater risk of contact with people in suburban areas. Some other snake species might see an expansion of their habitat, while others might encounter a contraction of it. Specifically, species residing in inland zones, such as the inland taipan, might face the problem of habitat reduction in accordance with climate change.Such changes in habitats of the mentioned species can be attributed to the impact of climate change on their ecosystems.

Snakebite deaths in Australia

Australia usually records a relatively small number of deaths resulting from snakebites, averaging at two to three per year. This can be attributed to effective healthcare facilities, ready access to antivenoms, and public knowledge about safety precautions in case of a snake attack.Although there have been very low numbers of fatalities, the emergence of more snakes in close proximity to populated regions might mean that the incidence of attacks will be higher. This could also increase the rate of snake sightings and instances of non-fatal attacks. It is crucial to be prepared for any potential attacks since this information could help to mitigate future risks. Knowledge about which regions snakes tend to emerge in could help in providing antivenoms for such locations.Different types of snakes require different types of treatment. This study could provide assistance for such purposes and even contribute towards conservation programs for some of the species.
