Sahara is a desert commonly perceived to be a massive expanse of sand and devoid of life, but research reveals that this desert is a habitat for a great diversity of life forms. According to the study “
Outline of the Biological History of the Sahara” published in the Journal of Arid Environments, the region is home to around 70 mammal species, 90 bird species, and nearly 100 reptile species. To adapt to this difficult living environment, most animals have developed special mechanisms such as night activities, the ability to conserve water, and thermal tolerance. Some animals dig holes in the ground during the day to protect themselves from heat, while some others can go without water for long durations.
Exotic animals that thrive in the Sahara Desert
The animals residing in the Sahara Desert have adapted themselves to the difficult climate that includes extreme temperatures, no sources of water, and scanty plant life. The methods adopted by the animals include nocturnal behaviour, retention of water within the body, and resistance to high temperatures.
Dromedary camel
The camel dromedary is one of the best-known creatures of the desert because it is able to survive even without drinking water. The fat deposits in its hump provide a source of energy, and the animal’s regulation of body temperature minimises water loss.
Fennec fox
The fennec fox, being small and nocturnal, is distinguished by its enormous ears that help release excess heat as well as locate prey under the sands.
It hunts during the night to escape extreme daytime temperatures.
Addax
An antelope species native to the deserts of Africa, the addax lives in areas where there are no water sources and has adapted to living in hot climates. The addax can live without water because it gets its water from plants and has white fur to reflect the sun.
North African ostrich
It is the biggest bird alive and can run at very fast speeds. This bird can live in the desert because it eats seeds and vegetation found in the dry areas.
Saharan silver ant
It is an insect adapted to high temperatures and lives in the desert. The Saharan silver ant lives for only a short period of time during the hottest hours of the day.
Dorcas gazelle
A gazelle species, it is able to live without water, and its diet consists of plants. The dorcas gazelle lives in hot regions and has a lightweight body, which enables it to move easily in sandy areas.
Sand cat
This is a desert-dwelling wild cat that has thick fur enabling it to cope with both the hot sands of the desert and cool nights. The animal hunts mostly at night and rarely needs sources of water.
Saharan horned viper
This poisonous snake blends perfectly with its environment, digging deep into the soil. It hunts using the ambush method, surviving in extremely hot conditions.
